Geocodio launched HIPAA-compliant geocoding on August 1, 2018.

Geocodio+HIPAA is certified by a third party as HIPAA-compliant. It enables you to convert patient address data (PII and PHI) into latitude and longitude and stay fully legally compliant. You can also reverse geocode PII, or convert latitude/longitude to approximate addresses.

You can also append additional data, such as Census data, Congressional districts and contact information, state legislative districts, timezones, and school districts. It is available via API and spreadsheet upload.

Over the past few years, we've heard from many healthcare organizations and companies that serve healthcare organizations that HIPAA-compliant geocoding is something they struggle with.

Addresses, even if they are detached from patient names, are one of the 18 types of Personal Health Information (PHI) that are covered under HIPAA:

All geographical subdivisions smaller than a State, including street address, city, county, precinct, zip code, and their equivalent geocodes, except for the initial three digits of a zip code, if according to the current publicly available data from the Bureau of the Census: (1) The geographic unit formed by combining all zip codes with the same three initial digits contains more than 20,000 people; and (2) The initial three digits of a zip code for all such geographic units containing 20,000 or fewer people is changed to 000.

The HIPAA-compliant option has gone through regulatory audits to inspect specific areas of our operation, including infrastructure redundancy, security, internal processes and employee training. It is completely separated from our general offering, and does not share backend resources.

While it is intended for the needs of healthcare-related uses, non-healthcare uses with heightened security requirements can also use this option.
